How to Make the Most of Work Experience as an FE Student
Work experience is one of the most valuable things you can do as a further education student. It gives you a real taste of the workplace, builds your confidence, and gives you something concrete to talk about in future job applications. But it only works if you put the effort in.
1. Do your research before you go
Before your first day, find out as much as you can about the organisation. Look at their website, understand what they do, and think about what you want to learn. Turning up informed shows initiative and makes a strong first impression.
2. Treat it like a real job
Be on time. Be smart. Put your phone away. Even if the placement is unpaid and lasts only a week, you are being assessed whether you realise it or not. Many employers use work experience as a way to identify people they might hire in future.
3. Ask questions — the right way
There are no silly questions during work experience. But think before you ask: try to figure things out yourself first, and if you do need help, explain what you have already tried. This shows employers you are independent and willing to learn.
4. Keep a daily log
Write down what you did each day, what you learned, and what surprised you. This will be invaluable when you come to write your CV or fill in a university application. It also helps you reflect on whether this is genuinely a career path you want to pursue.
5. Follow up afterwards
Send a short thank-you email to your supervisor after your placement ends. It takes two minutes and almost nobody does it. It leaves a lasting impression and keeps the door open for future opportunities — whether that is a part-time job, a reference, or a full-time role when you finish college.
